Overview
Muse AI is a cross-platform mobile journaling app (iOS & Android) that replaces text-based journaling with guided voice conversations. Users speak naturally with an AI journaling companion powered by Play AI — the app listens, asks reflective follow-up questions, and returns structured session summaries with mood insights and action items. Built for a client in Toronto and launched to users in Berlin, Muse AI combines scheduled journaling sessions, push notification reminders, voice cloning personalization, and a subscription monetization model into a single polished React Native app.
The Challenge
Traditional journaling apps rely on text input which many users find limiting. The challenge was building a voice-first experience that felt natural — not robotic — while reliably converting unstructured spoken conversations into structured summaries, mood scores, and actionable insights. The multi-step onboarding (voice cloning + selfie setup) needed to feel intuitive across both iOS and Android, and the subscription flow had to drive conversions without interrupting the reflective experience.
How We Solved It
Voice Journaling via Play AI Integration
Integrated Play AI's voice API as the conversational backbone. The journaling companion guides users through reflective questions — 'What unexpressed anger am I carrying?', 'What emotions do I find most difficult to express?' — and adapts follow-up prompts based on user responses. Voice cloning in the onboarding flow lets users personalize the companion's voice.
Session Summaries & Mood Insights
After each voice session, a FastAPI backend processes the conversation and returns a structured summary: key insights, mood analysis with percentage scores (e.g. Sadness 70%), recommended action items, and a generated AI artwork image representing the session's emotional theme. All sessions are stored in a scrollable timeline for long-term reflection.
Scheduling & Push Notifications
Users schedule journaling sessions via an integrated calendar. The FastAPI backend manages session scheduling logic and triggers push notifications to remind users of upcoming sessions — driving consistency and daily engagement.
Multi-Step Onboarding
A guided onboarding flow covers voice cloning setup, selfie capture for profile personalization, journaling mode selection (Talk or Type), and subscription prompt. Each step was designed for performance across a range of iOS and Android devices.
Subscription Monetization
Built-in subscription layer prompts users to upgrade at natural breakpoints — after session limits, extended insights, or premium journaling options. Payment flows integrated cleanly with the app experience without disrupting the reflective tone.
Firebase Auth + FastAPI Backend
Firebase Authentication handles secure user login. Firebase Database stores user settings, subscription status, and journaling history. The FastAPI backend handles session management, scheduling APIs, notification dispatch, and the AI processing pipeline — hosted on AWS for scalability.
