FrugalFox AI — Mobile App

Overview

FrugalFox AI is a cross-platform mobile shopping companion (iOS & Android) that transforms how everyday consumers find deals. Users scan a product barcode, snap a photo, or type a name — and the app instantly surfaces the cheapest available price across online retailers and local stores. A personalized home dashboard tracks monthly savings, surfaces trending products, and shows most-purchased items. The platform is powered by a React Native frontend, a Python FastAPI backend, and a cloud-native AWS infrastructure with autoscaling for peak shopping periods.

The Challenge

Real-time price aggregation from dozens of retailers requires both speed and accuracy — scrapers and APIs can go stale, return inconsistent formats, or rate-limit. Product recognition via barcode or image scan had to match items to a retailer database with high confidence across millions of SKUs. The architecture also needed to handle traffic spikes (holiday sales, flash events) without degraded response times, while staying cost-effective at scale.

How We Solved It

1

Multi-Input Product Scanning

Built a three-mode scan system: barcode scanner, camera-based image recognition (computer vision), and manual text search. Computer vision and NLP-based search mapping ensures that even partial or ambiguous inputs return the correct product match with high confidence.

2

Real-Time Price Aggregation

Developed a data aggregation engine combining retailer APIs and scraping pipelines to pull live prices across multiple marketplaces. Results are deduplicated and ranked by price, with the best deal surfaced instantly on the scan result screen.

3

Savings Dashboard & Tracking

The home screen shows a running 'This Month's Savings' total, Trending Now products, and Most Purchased items. Users can see exactly how much FrugalFox has saved them over time — creating a habit loop that drives daily engagement.

4

Price Drop Alerts

Users toggle 'Get Alerts' on any scanned product. The backend monitors price changes across retailers and triggers push notifications the moment a price drops — turning passive shoppers into active savers.

5

Onboarding & Personalization

A multi-step onboarding flow introduces Price Comparison, Rewards & Badges, and Shopping Lists. AI-driven personalization then tailors deal recommendations based on shopping history, preferred categories, and browsing patterns.

6

AWS Cloud Infrastructure & CI/CD

Deployed on AWS EC2 and ECS with autoscaling policies to handle peak load. S3 and CloudFront serve static assets. A GitHub Actions + Docker-based CI/CD pipeline enables rapid, zero-downtime deployments — essential for a consumer app requiring frequent data and feature updates.

Results & Impact

Live on iOS & Android

Single React Native codebase deployed to both App Store and Google Play with consistent UX across platforms.

Instant Price Discovery

Scan-to-result in seconds — aggregating live prices from multiple retailers and surfacing the best deal immediately.

Savings Tracking

Personalized monthly savings dashboard — users see exactly how much they've saved (e.g. $94.80 this month) building long-term engagement.

Price Drop Alerts

Push notifications triggered the moment tracked item prices fall — keeping users engaged between active sessions.

Autoscaling Infrastructure

AWS ECS autoscaling handles seasonal spikes (Black Friday, flash sales) without performance degradation.

Multi-Category Coverage

Fashion, electronics, groceries, appliances, fitness, healthcare, and more — broad category support built on extensible scraper architecture.
